Legendary film critic Roger Ebert, who was battling cancer for a long time, passed away on Thursday, April 4.
Paying a tribute to the famed writer, Chicago Sun-Times — the daily tabloid for which Ebert was a critic from 1967 until his death — recalls Ebert’s independent voice and his unceasing passion for cinema.
For a film with a daring director, a talented cast, a captivating plot or, ideally, all three, there could be no better advocate than Roger Ebert, who passionately celebrated and promoted excellence in film while deflating the awful, the derivative or the merely mediocre with an observant eye, a sharp wit and a depth of knowledge that delighted his millions of readers and viewers.
“No good film is too long,” he once wrote, a sentiment he felt strongly enough about to have engraved on pens. “No bad movie is short enough.”

If you read The Times of India, chances are that you would have read many stories by its Delhi-based Principal Correspondent Abhinav Garg who works on the legal beat.
The 33-year-old, who is also a Charles Wallace Fellow at the Cardiff University, talks about the challenges on the field, his days as a rookie and how he polished his reporting skills.
How and when did you decide to be a journalist?
I have always believed I am a good storyteller. And I have a problem with authority. When combined, such an attitude naturally leads one to Journalism.
Which journalism entrance exams did you write and how did you prepare for them?
Only IIMC. Never prepared separately, but since I am an avid reader of magazines, newspaper columns/reports, so always had a well-informed view of things. This helped in cracking IIMC more so, since with our batch the entrance exam for the first time had became subjective. It was an objective multiple choice questions pattern till 2005.
